Hi y'all, Those of you on the r/Bayonetta subReddit may have seen my thread response above. I decided it was worth it to share a scan of the essay with the community here because, well, I like it and I think y'all will like it too. It's nuanced and references a lot of other articles that can serve as a jumping-off point for more analysis. I thought it might be a useful tool for those who like making videos and essays and having * coughGOODFAITHcough * discussions about our Beloved video game series. This essay is actually the reason why I started playing Bayonetta. Like many others I was familiar with her from Smash 4 and was intrigued by Witch Time and the weird elephant (?) noises Gomorrah was making, lol. But I was lucky enough to attend a talk by one of the co-editors of Queer Game Studies at my university, where they probably made a plug for the book. I didn't have anything like it on my shelf and I had seldom seen peer-reviewed academic analysis about video games, let alone queer academic analysis of games. So I ordered it, read the Bayonetta essay, and the rest is history! Here is a link to a pdf of the essay: "Welcome to My Fantasy Zone: Bayonetta and Queer Femme Disturbance" by Amanda Phillips, 2017
If this essay interests you, please consider supporting the authors and editors and buy the book! Enjoy! ~lowpolyvigridiancat~
